Call for works

Composers, performers, and multimedia artists are invited to submit works in the following categories:

  1. Compositions for electroacoustic fixed media (C1)
  2. Compositions for instruments and electronics (C2)
  3. Interactive mixed media performances (C3)
  4. Live coding (C4)
  5. Original electroacoustic soundtracks of silent movies (C5)
  6. Multimedia installations (C6)

The call is open to all composers regardless of nationality, age, or career stage.

C1. Compositions for electroacoustic fixed media (up to 8 channels)

The audio of the complete work must be submitted in stereo format, even for multichannel works. It will be possible to project on the whole 8-channel system even works composed for smaller channel configurations.

C2. Compositions for instruments and electronics

Scores employing from one up to any combination of the following instruments including the whole ensemble, with fixed media and/or live electronics, will be accepted:

  • flute (including alto G flute and piccolo)
  • cello (including electric bass)
  • piano

Scores must be submitted as PDF documents complemented by fixed media audio files and/or live electronics chart documentation. Composers will be in charge of the sound projection and the control of the live electronics.

C3. Interactive mixed media performances

Interactive performances involving new interfaces, instruments, mixed media, and electro-acoustic devices will be considered. The documentation of the project must be thoroughly detailed. The proponents are entirely in charge of any aspect of the realisation of their performance. Technical requests have to be evaluated by the organisation.

C4. Live coding

Proposals involving audiovisual setups based on live code writing will be considered regardless of the software system used.

For all categories from C1 to C4, the length of the submitted works must not exceed 10 minutes.

C5. Original electroacoustic soundtracks of silent movies

Composers are invited to present original soundtracks on fixed stereo support for silent short films with a microscopic theme coming from the University of Turin, Museo Nazionale del Cinema, and Istituto Luce. URLs for downloading the films will be provided upon request (→ andrea.valle@unito.it).

C6. Multimedia installations – “Tabulae Mirificae”

Proponents are invited to submit detailed designs for multimedia installations, the works selected (3) will be set up with standard audio/video equipment provided by the organization. The authors will be responsible of any other necessary device. The thematic content of the proposed installations must refer to the collections of educational tables in the medical-scientific field, created by Giulio Bizzozero and other scientists between the end of the 19th century and the mid-20th century, coming from the heritage of the departments and the archive of the University of Turin, made available by the organizers upon request (→ andrea.valle@unito.it).

Submission, selection, and participation guidelines

Submissions and the reviewing process are managed through EasyChair. To submit a work, use the following link.

All audio, video, and other non-pdf files must be uploaded in high quality on a permanent storing service (e.g., Dropbox or Google Drive) or a streaming platform (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo or Soundcloud). Authors must provide the unlisted URLs in the submission form.

Please note that no more than one work per composer will be programmed. For all categories, attendance of the artists to the conference is strictly required, as they will be in charge of the sound projection, control of the live electronics, and everything related. In case of absence, the performance of the work will be cancelled. For each concert, a rehearsal session will be scheduled.
